Jack of None

JACK OF NONE is an experimental rock / art band split between Manila, Philippines and Chicago IL, USA. It is comprised of siblings A.G. Syjuco (principal composer on guitar, bass and synths), Maxine Syjuco (poet-songwriter and vocalist), and Julian Syjuco (guitar). The band's debut album,

"Who's Listening to Van Gogh's Ear?" was released globally in April of 2016. It is being described by critics as "haunting and thought-provoking", "a brave new day for OPM (Original Pilipino Music)", "progressive and bold" as well as "an odd, fascinating combination of poetry, art, and rock into a satisfying whole". MAXINE SYJUCO is a poet and visual artist from Manila, Philippines. She is the youngest daughter of artists Cesare Syjuco and Jean Marie Syjuco.

Working mainly with photography, digital collage, painting and installation art, her work "possesses an intimate, philosophical, and often twisted voice in storytelling. Manipulating faces, unveiling poignant surrealities, and probing into abandoned rooms of the subconscious, Maxine authors dark, thought-provoking introspections of the human condition and its fragility -- conjuring a netherworld where ghostly images exist neither here nor there." Her first book of poetry, "A Secret Life," was published in 2008 and received critical acclaim.

Her poems have been translated into Polish and French, and have seen print in several international anthologies including the Asia Literary Review, The Poet's Guild Quarterly, Chopin with Cherries, and the 2011 Rhino International Poetry Anthology. Maxine's exhibits and poetry-performances have taken place in venues as varied as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the Tokiwa Museum of Japan, the Hangaram Museum of Korea, the Art Takes Miami Exhibition in the U.S.A., and others. A.G. SYJUCO is the eldest son of artists Cesare Syjuco and Jean Marie Syjuco.

At age 15, he was the lead guitarist, composer and arranger for FAUST!, an art-rock band of prodigious siblings that was discovered by MTV Asia in 1996, quickly signed to a major label, and disbanded 2 years later after releasing 2 controversial albums that included the historic "My Secret Identity" (MSI) in 1998 -- probably the first full-length album in the Philippines to be released for free on the Internet by a group of commercially signed recording artists. Abandoning his professional interest in music for the next eight years, he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology from San Beda Alabang, and presently holds a management position in a multinational tech conglomerate.

His more recent musical endeavors include co-producing his Father's critically acclaimed album, "A Sudden Rush of Genius". On Jack of None's "Who's Listening to Van Gogh's Ear" he acts as principal composer, guitar player and producer. A.G. currently resides in Chicago IL with his wife, Mica, and their daughter, Muli. JULIAN SYJUCO is the youngest of five children of Cesare Syjuco and Jean Marie Syjuco. He is both an accomplished painter and electric guitarist of note. He was recently singled out as one of the bright up-and-coming new generation abstractionists, and was featured in the National Artist Jose Joya Retrospective in 2012.

JACK OF NONE - “Who’s Listening to Van Gogh’s Ear”
by Lorraine Vergara
JACK OF NONE is a band that marches to the beat of a different drum -- its own.
The trio of siblings’ self-produced debut album “Who’s Listening to Van Gogh’s Ear” is chock-full of tight, riff-heavy tunes and trance-inducing soundscapes that are familiar in structure, but sound like nothing in the market today. Some might suggest it’s their minimalistic approach to experimentation -- often introducing subtle nuances, clever transitions and unexpected twists between parts of the same track.

Others might argue that it’s Maxine Syjuco’s use of the spoken word and her unique brand of haunting, (at times) unnerving poetry and storytelling. It’s most likely all of these things that make the band so undeniably different; their album, a true landmark in the Philippines' independent music scene.

Musically, many of the tracks seem to sit somewhere between the alt-metal, industrial rock and post-punk genres – an odd shade of gray they’ve claimed as their own. Of course, there’s good and bad in that. On the one hand, the small but loyal following they’ve gathered recognizes the brilliance and ingenuity of their work -- putting them at the forefront of the avant-garde. On the other hand, the band may find itself on the outside-looking-in; with a sound that’s neither pop, nor the established “alternative”.

They don’t seem bothered in the least about the latter.

“We’ve never had delusions of grandeur. We never thought we’d become The Beatles or anything like that,” says A.G. Syjuco, the eldest of the siblings and the band’s principal composer and producer.
“What you hear on the record is what happens when you put the 3 of us together. We never sat down and decided to form an art band, or listen to a track and go ‘It isn’t weird enough!’  We just wanted to make music together and this is the result. We like to think there’s a kind of synergy there where the combined effect is greater than the sum of its parts, but we’ll let the listeners decide.”

Still, there are undoubtedly many obstacles for the band to overcome, despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews the album has garnered so far from critics and fans alike. This is further exacerbated by their inability to promote the record with live performances. Geographically, they couldn’t be farther apart.  A.G. currently resides in the United States' mid-west, while Maxine and Julian live in Manila, Philippines.

“There are definitely hurdles, but that’s what’s been driving this project from the get-go. It’s a challenge to us. We want to pave our own path and figure it out,” A.G. continues.

“I’ve been sensing a lot of doom-and-gloom from industry insiders with all the digital disruption going on. You have social media promotion and streaming services to contend with, and musicians are forced to re-think what it means to ‘make it’ because the old formula of playing shows and getting signed no longer seems to apply. That’s exciting to us! ”

Indeed, there’s plenty to be excited about with the release of “Who’s Listening to Van Gogh’s Ear”.
As a fan and critic, the album is truly a breath of fresh air -- a welcome relief to the drudgery of the tried-and-true in an industry that seems almost lost-at-sea. As a casual observer, I’m dying to see where it all goes from here!

Building The Alaskan Highway - Mega Structure | National Geographic

Building The Alaskan Highway - Mega Structure.

The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.

Jerfe Dittmann

Jerfe Dittmann

Born in Manila, Philippines as the 5th of 6 children. My mom, a physician and my dad, a businessman encouaraged me to play the piano along with my siblings. I started to play the piano by ear at age 9. My mom, who often said that "no one could ever take away from you your piano playing skills", bought the piano for the family when I turned 11-years old. I then started to be taught by classical piano teachers ever since. I have been playing the piano on and off for 40 years and has played for my family, relatives, friends and special occasions through the years. I also played recitals at young age.

My biggest accomplishment is the 2015 debut for CD entitled " All Of Me (Volume 1). The album is a 15-song collection of mostly my favorite movie soundtracks. More than half of the CD sales I earned so far has been donated to the sponsorship of an impoverished child through World Vision and aid to few of my struggling former classmates in the Philippines.

My husband, William Dittmann of 11 years, has been proudly supportive of me and often encourage me to keep playing consistently. I am now back to work with my long-time classical piano teacher, Holly Ohoro, who graduated from Julliard School of Music. With a love for Christ Jesus and a vision to help as many poor people all over the world, I am inspired to work on my sophomore CD, slated to hit the market later this year.

I express my feelings through my music. It is a gift that should be shared around the world. I found happiness in my music because it is a talent that heals the soul of many. As an artist, I am so driven to create more,in order to help my charities, The World Vision and Disabled American Veterans. I believe that to dream is to make it come true. So my courage and perseverance of making my first CD did come true. I believe in myself and nothing will stop me from moving forward because my good intention will help more people and thats my next step whether I make it big or not. My accomplishment is so much rewarding to myself and to many.

Bass Reeves film - Lawless

Bass Reeves EXTENDED Trailer

Bass Reeves: Black US Marshal Remembered

Bass Reeves: The Real Lone Ranger

Bass Reeves: The Real Lone Ranger

Reeves was born into slavery in 1838 in Crawford County, Arkansas. Reeves was named after his grandfather, Basse Washington. Bass Reeves and his family were slaves of Arkansas state legislator William Steele Reeves. When Bass Reeves was eight (about 1846), William Reeves moved to Grayson County, Texas, near Sherman in the Peters Colony. Bass Reeves may have served William Steel Reeves son, Colonel George R. Reeves who was a legislator in Texas until the time of his death from rabies in 1882. George Reeves was the Speaker of the House. During the American Civil War, Bass parted company with George Reeves, perhaps "because Bass beat up George after a dispute in a card game."  Bass Reeves fled north into the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) and lived with the Cherokee, Seminole, and Creek Indians until he was freed by the thirteenth amendment, which abolished slavery in 1865.

Later Reeves moved to Arkansas and farmed near Van Buren. He married Nellie Jennie from Texas, with whom he had eleven children.

Career

Reeves and his family farmed until 1875, when Isaac Parker was appointed federal judge for the Indian Territory. Parker appointed James F. Fagan as U.S. Marshal, directing him to hire 200 deputy U.S. Marshals. Fagan had heard about Reeves, who knew the Indian Territory and could speak several Indian languages.  He recruited him as one of his deputies and Reeves was the first black Deputy, West of the Mississippi River.[2][5] Reeves was initially assigned as a Deputy U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Arkansas, which also had responsibility for the Indian Territory.[6] Reeves served in that district until 1893, when he transferred to the Eastern District of Texas in Paris, Texas for a short while, then in 1897 he was transferred to the Muskogee Federal Court.

Reeves worked for thirty-two years as a Federal peace officer in the Indian Territory. He was one of Judge Parker's most valued deputies. Reeves brought in some of the most dangerous criminals of the time, but was never wounded, despite having his hat and belt shot off on separate occasions.[2] Once he had to arrest his own son for murder.

In addition to being a marksman with a rifle and pistol, Reeves, during his long career, developed superior detective skills. When he retired in 1907, Reeves claimed to have arrested over 3,000 felons. He is said to have shot and killed fourteen outlaws to defend his own life.

One of his sons, Bennie Reeves, was charged with the murder of his wife. Marshal Reeves was disturbed and shaken by the incident but demanded to accept the responsibility of bringing Bennie to justice. Bennie was eventually tracked and captured, tried and convicted. He served his time in Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas before being released and living the rest of his life as a responsible and model citizen.

When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, Reeves, then 68, became an officer of the Muskogee, Oklahoma police department. He served for two years before he became ill and had to retire.

He was himself once charged with murdering a posse cook. At his trial before Judge Parker, Reeves was represented by former United States Attorney W.H.H. Clayton, who had been his colleague and friend. Reeves was acquitted.

Death

Reeves' health began to fail, and he died of Bright's disease (nephritis) in 1910. He was an uncle of Paul L. Brady, the first black man appointed an Federal Administrative Law Judge (in 1972).

Legacy

In 2007, the U.S. Route 62 bridge crossing the Arkansas River between Muskogee and Fort Gibson, Oklahoma was named the Bass Reeves Memorial Bridge in his honor.  On May 16, 2012, a bronze statue of Reeves by sculptor Harold Holden, of Enid, Oklahoma, was cast at a foundry in Norman, Oklahoma. It was then moved to its permanent location at Pendergraft Park in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

In popular culture Film

Bass Reeves, a fictionalized film of his life and career, was released by Ponderous Productions of San Antonio in 2010.

It is believed by some that Bass Reeves was the inspiration for The Lone Ranger radio and television series, even though he was never a Texas Ranger and spent little time in Texas.

Morgan Freeman has expressed interest in playing Reeves in a motion picture about his life.

Print

The only scholarly research book on the life of Bass Reeves was written by historian Art T. Burton, the book is titled Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves, which was published in 2006. The book is currently available also as an audio book. Reeves' story has been presented to kids. Vaunda Micheaux Nelson's book, Bad News for Outlaws: The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves, Deputy U.S. Marshal, won the 2010 Coretta Scott King Award for best author.

Illustrator and historian Joel Christian Gill published a graphic novel in 2014 called Tales of the Talented Tenth, Volume 1, which featured the story of Bass Reeves.

Authors Ken Farmer and Buck Stienke have penned four novels based on and inspired by the exploits of Bass Reeves, The Nations, Haunted Falls (winner of the Laramie Award for best action western, 2013), Hell Hole, and Across the Red.

Author Elizabeth Bear depicted Bass Reeves in her 2015 wild-west/Steampunk novel Karen Memory.

Reeves 'guest-stars' in the ninth volume of the Atomic Robo comic book series, "Atomic Robo and the Knights of the Golden Circle." The story, which takes place in 1884, features Robo, Reeves, and Doc Holliday teaming up to fight a mad scientist.

Television

Reeves figures prominently in an episode of How It's Made, in which a Bass Reeves limited edition collectors' figurine is shown in various stages of the production process.  The story of Bass Reeves, portrayed by Jaleel White, is told on an episode of Drunk History by Mark Gagliardi.
"Bass Reeves: The Real Lone Ranger" is the title and subject of "Legends and Lies: The Real West" Season 1, Episode 9 (2015).
"Bass Reeves - The Real Lone Ranger" is also the title and subject of "Gunslingers" Season 2, Episode 4 (2015). Reeves is portrayed by Joseph Callender.

It has been suggested that Reeves was an inspiration for the fictional character The Lone Ranger.  The origin of this may have been a 2008 biography in which the author stated "that Bass Reeves is the closest real person to resemble the fictional Lone Ranger." However, Reeves was never a Texas Ranger, and records of the creation of The Lone Ranger show no evidence of this.

Queen Philippa - England's first black queen

http://www.100greatblackbritons.com/bios/queen_phillipa.html

England's first black queen, mother of the black prince

Philippa was the daughter of William of Hainault, a lord in part of what is now Belgium. When she was nine the King of England, Edward II, decided that he would marry his son, the future Edward III, to her, and sent one of his bishops, a Bishop Stapeldon, to look at her. He described her thus:

"The lady whom we saw has not uncomely hair, betwixt blue-black and brown. Her head is cleaned shaped; her forehead high and broad, and standing somewhat forward. Her face narrows between the eyes, and the lower part of her face is still more narrow and slender than the forehead. Her eyes are blackish brown and deep. Her nose is fairly smooth and even, save that is somewhat broad at the tip and flattened, yet it is no snub nose. Her nostrils are also broad, her mouth fairly wide. Her lips somewhat full and especially the lower lip…all her limbs are well set and unmaimed, and nought is amiss so far as a man may see. Moreover, she is brown of skin all over, and much like her father, and in all things she is pleasant enough, as it seems to us."

Four years later Prince Edward went to visit his bride-to-be and her family, and fell in live with her. She was betrothed to him and in 1327, when she was only 14, she arrived in England. The next year, when she was 15, they married and were crowned King and Queen in 1330 when she was heavily pregnant with her first child and only 17.

This first child was called Edward, like his father, but is better known as the Black Prince. Many say that he was called this because of the colour of his armour, but there are records that show that he was called 'black' when he was very small. The French called him 'Le Noir'.

Philippa was a remarkable woman. She was very wise and was known and loved by the English for her kindliness and restraint. She would travel with her husband on his campaigns and take her children as well. When the King was abroad she ruled in his absence. Queen's College in Oxford University was founded under her direction by her chaplain, Robert de Eglesfield in 1341 when she was 28. She brought many artists and scholars from Hainault who contributed to English culture.

When she died, Edward never really recovered, and she was much mourned by him and the country. King Edward had a beautiful sculpture made for her tomb which you can see today at Westminster Abbey.

Maggie Szabo

Press quotes:
"Canadian singer Maggie Szabo’s original sound – a mix of soulful pop melodies – has won her more than 13 million views on YouTube plus accolades from such names as Perez Hilton (who deemed her “a superstar on the rise”).” - Yahoo! Music

"Canadian native Maggie Szabo finds herself at a crossroads on her soulful ballad “Forgive and Forget.” On the track the rising hitmaker struggles to determine the next move with a cheating lover. “I can’t move on, because I still love you” Szabo earnestly laments over the track, embracing her frustrations and hurt to find a musical release from the tension. While there’s no clear answer to Maggie Szabo’s predicament, it is exceedingly clear that the performer has a potential hit on her hands.” - PopWrapped

"From her vocals to her infectious songwriting, there’s no doubting that she’ll make her mark on the world of pop and it will mean something when it does.” - Patrick O’Heffernan (Hollywood Progressive)

"Szabo’s infused pop sound is infectious. Between Szabo’s crystal clear tone, out of this world range and powerful presence, what knocks “Forgive and Forget” out of the park is Szabo’s ability to story tell and connect with her audience.” - NewSickMusic
